Denmark took over the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the eighth time on July 1.
The Danish EU presidency begins with high ambitions to enhance security and competitiveness. The Danish government has chosen two main priorities for the presidency, which we look forward to delivering on: a safer Europe, including stronger management of migration to the EU and continued support for Ukraine, and a competitive and green Europe.
Under the slogan ‘A strong Europe in a changing world’, the Danish Presidency will work for a secure Europe as well as a competitive and green Europe.
Since being appointed as Minister for European Affairs, Marie Bjerre has visited all 27 EU countries as well as eight candidate countries. As such, the Minister has provided Denmark with solid insights into the individual countries’ views on our joint challenges – and how to best solve them.
“The EU Presidency offers Denmark a unique opportunity to strengthen the European agenda, and we are ready to seize it. In today’s shifting geopolitical landscape, Europe must become significantly stronger, both economically, politically, and militarily. That is why we have set out an ambitious presidency programme aimed at enhancing the EU’s defence and security, providing support to Ukraine, and tackling irregular migration. All agendas where Denmark has already taken a leading role within the EU. At the same time, we will work to improve the conditions for European businesses by reducing regulatory burdens, while maintaining our commitment to the green transition. This will strengthen Europe’s long-term competitiveness. The Danish government is ready to get to work, and we look forward to delivering tangible results,” says Minister for European Affairs Marie Bjerre.
The last Danish presidency of the EU was in 2012, and this will last until the end of 2025.
