Drljević with French MPs: Parliament is of great importance for negotiation process

Montenegro continues to maintain its pro-European course, which is facilitated by the involvement of the entire Montenegrin society in the accession process, in particular the Parliament of Montenegro, which plays an important role in the process of harmonisation of legislation with the acquis communautaire, was assessed during the meeting between the Chief Negotiator Aleksandar Drljević and the Parliamentary Delegation of France.

During the meeting with French MEPs Liliana Tanguy, Jacqueline Maquet, Jacques Marie, and Mireille Clapot, the Chief Negotiator stressed the importance of the support of EU Member States, especially France, for the opening of Chapter 8 – Competition and the next phase of the negotiations, which entails closing the chapter.

“Increasing the EU’s presence in the Western Balkans region as well as further support to the reform processes of the countries of the region are important for further enhancing stability and overall progress. Montenegro continues to maintain its pro-European course and is clearly at the forefront of European integration in the region, as evidenced by the results so far in the negotiation process”, Chief Negotiator highlited.

Drljević reminded that the Parliament of Montenegro has been involved in the negotiation process from the beginning through the participation of representatives in working groups, as well as through discussion and opinion on draft negotiating positions and regular review of the results at the European Integration Committee and the plenary of the Assembly.

The French MEPs stressed that there is a space for enhancing cooperation between the two countries’ parliaments and emphasized the fact that the parliamentary Committee on European Integration is headed by an opposition MP, confirming the Montenegrin side’s commitment to include all social actors in the accession process. They welcomed the concrete results in the field of fighting corruption and underlined the stable trend of citizens’ support for Montenegro’s accession to the EU.

The French delegation agrees with the Chief Negotiator that the EU will only be complete with membership of the entire Western Balkans.
