Country’s development depends on progress of local communities

Municipality of Bijelo Polje has recognized the benefits of the EU accession process and assumed the responsibilities all local administrations have in the process, as well as in the general development of the country, said Chief Negotiator Aleksandar Drljevic.

Drljevic visited Bijelo Polje together with Head of the working group for Chapter 22 Ivana Vujosevic, within the project “Days of Europe in Your Town”. Following the meeting with Bijelo Polje Mayor Petar Smolovic, the Chief Negotiator participated in the debate “The role of local administration in the accession negotiations”, and visited the city garage, the project implemented through IPA funds.

During the public discussion, Drljevic emphasized that creation of the conditions for even and stable economic development of the whole country is the requirement for the progress in the Montenegro’s EU accession process. “Therefore, it is of utmost importance to develop capacities and prepare new ideas at local level through concrete projects in this pre-accession period, which will certainly become the subject of EU assistance”, Drljevic added.

Smolovic noted that the process of decentralization brings higher responsibilities to local governments and increase in the citizens’ expectations, organizations and businesses in terms of improvement of living standard at local level.
