Zenović and Šarec: Praise for Reforms, Focus on Political Consensus

Chief Negotiator of Montenegro with the European Union, Predrag Zenović, met with Member of the European Parliament and permanent rapporteur for Montenegro, Marjan Šarec, as part of the ongoing diplomatic momentum aimed at accelerating Montenegro’s EU accession process.

The meeting focused on exchanging views regarding the latest European Parliament Report, future plans in the negotiation process, and key challenges Montenegro faces on its path toward EU membership.

Chief Negotiator Zenović presented his counterpart with an ambitious plan to close negotiation chapters during 2025, emphasizing that the rule of law remains the top priority, along with the need to strengthen administrative capacities.

“Montenegro is determined to complete the negotiations in 2026. We are approaching reforms seriously, responsibly, and strategically, fully aware that EU membership is the country’s most important national goal. We are grateful to the European Parliament and Rapporteur Šarec for their consistent support and partnership in this historic process,” Zenović stated.

During the talks, Rapporteur Šarec praised the work of the Ministry of European Affairs and the negotiation structure.

“Montenegro has made visible progress on the path to the EU, especially in the area of rule of law. We encourage the continuation of reforms and call for stronger internal political dialogue — the European future of Montenegro must be a shared national goal of all political stakeholders,” Šarec said.

The meeting was described as highly constructive and an encouraging step toward further synergy between Montenegro and European institutions. Both parties agreed that stability, political responsibility, and commitment to reforms are the key pillars that will define the pace and success of Montenegro’s path to full EU membership.
