Montenegro is making dynamic progress toward EU membership and can count on the support of the Kingdom of Belgium, which is one of the strongest advocates of enlargement policy and Montenegro’s accession to the EU, it was stated during talks between Minister of European Affairs Maida Gorčević and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Belgium, Maxime Prévot.
Minister Gorčević thanked Belgium for its continuous support for Montenegro’s EU accession. She said this is a crucial year for completing a major amount of work and that the Government is determined to achieve the goal it has set for itself—that Montenegro becomes the 28th member state of the EU by 2028.
“We have promised our citizens, and we will keep that promise. Montenegro will be the next full member of the European family. We are firmly working on this through the implementation of policies and the introduction of the best European practices and standards that are already improving the quality of life and contributing to the development of society,” Gorčević said.

Deputy Prime Minister Prévot said he was encouraged by the accelerated pace of reforms and expressed the expectation that Montenegro will succeed in closing all negotiation chapters within the planned timeframe. He stated that the Kingdom of Belgium is monitoring the implementation of obligations and offered full political, technical, and expert support, especially in the area of the rule of law, which is the backbone of Montenegro’s accession negotiations with the EU.
“I started my visit to the Western Balkans precisely with Montenegro, and that was not a random decision. We want to give special support to Montenegro as a frontrunner in the enlargement process. Montenegro has shown that, with strong political will, commitment, and dedicated work, significant results can be achieved in a short time. We are rooting for you and expect you to join us in the EU soon,” Prévot concluded.
