Montenegro part of the Safe2Eat 2026 campaign: strengthening trust in food safety

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), together with partners across Europe, has launched the third year of the Safe2Eat campaign, a cross-border initiative aimed at raising citizens’ awareness of food safety and providing practical guidance for making informed, science-based decisions.

The campaign started in April 2026 and builds on the successes of previous years, with the goal of further expanding its reach and encouraging citizens to think critically about food safety, both in the European Union and beyond. This year’s edition covers a total of 23 countries, including Montenegro, confirming the importance of regional and European cooperation in this area.

According to research conducted by IPSOS in November 2025, the previous edition of the campaign achieved significant reach, covering 41% of citizens in the surveyed countries. The campaign contributed to greater consumer awareness, encouraged more responsible choices when purchasing food, and increased interest in the scientific basis of food safety.

This year’s campaign focuses on three key areas: safe food handling, nutrition and health, and clear information on food composition, including additives, flavorings, novel foods, and allergen labeling.

“Montenegro is continuously working on aligning and implementing European Union regulations in the field of food safety. Citizens can have full confidence that the food on our market is safe and under constant supervision by the competent authorities. By participating in the Safe2Eat campaign, we want to further highlight the importance of informed choices and empower consumers to make decisions based on reliable and scientifically grounded information,” emphasized the Director of the Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Affairs Administration, Vladimir Đaković, adding that Montenegro’s participation in the campaign further confirms the commitment of institutions to ensure a high level of consumer protection.

Throughout the year, a number of activities will be carried out at both the European Union and national levels, with the aim of further informing and engaging citizens.

Citizens are invited to visit the official campaign website, and learn more about the available materials, and follow content on social media using the hashtag #Safe2EatEU.
